Pay‑per‑mile EV road tax — FAQ
Answers to common questions about the UK pay‑per‑mile road tax for EVs and PHEVs.
A proposed UK road tax that charges drivers of electric (EV) and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) cars based on miles driven. It is intended to begin from April 2028.
We use the opening 2028-29 rates of 3p per mile for EVs and 1.5p per mile for PHEVs, as set out in the government consultation. The government says rates will be uprated from 2029-30 in line with CPI inflation.
Government documents indicate there will be no tracking of where or when you drive. Drivers are expected to report mileage through the existing VED system, with details to be finalised after consultation.
